We live in a world that treats busyness like a badge of honour. We sprint from one task to the next, convinced that if we just push a little harder, work a little longer, or micro-manage our routines a little tighter, we will finally achieve that elusive state of “perfect balance.”
We wear our exhaustion like a medal, subtly competing over who slept the least or who has the longest to-do list. But lately, God has been gently—and firmly—reminding me of a foundational truth that cuts clean through the noise of our hustle culture: Rest is not a reward for finished work; it is an act of expedient obedience to care for the body and mind in honour of God in you
A couple of weeks ago, during the school half-term holiday, I made a radical decision. I closed my laptop. If you know me, you know how incredibly difficult that is. For the first time in what feels like forever, I chose to protect that time completely for my children, refusing to steal away precious hours from them just to stare at a glowing computer screen.
Was the nagging voice of my to-do list whispering in my ear? Of course it was. It was screaming about unanswered emails, unfinished projects, and tight deadlines. But as I sat in that intentional pause, letting the quiet settle around me, I realised something profound about our modern epidemic of chronic stress and anxiety.
The Trap of Total Control
In our wellness journeys, we often fall into the trap of thinking we can control every single outcome and person around us. We track our steps with smartwatches (which has honestly been a game-changer for me), plan our meals down to the calorie, and schedule our days down to the exact minute.
While stewardship of our time, health, and bodies is a beautiful thing, the minute it shifts from healthy management into a desperate attempt to maintain total control, it transforms into a burden we were never designed or equipped to carry.
Whether you are a mother, a father, a business owner, or a corporate professional, we need to normalise a new habit: allocating structured rest times as a non-negotiable, unmovable part of our calendars. If we can schedule client meetings and doctor appointments, we can schedule time to simply be.
When we refuse to stop, what we are really announcing to the universe is: “If I don’t hold this all together, it will completely fall apart.” When we look below the surface of our hyper-productivity, this mindset is often a direct pointer and a physical manifestation of a deep-rooted lack of trust in God. We mistakenly view ourselves as the ultimate providers and protectors of our lives, completely forgetting that He alone is sovereign.
Jesus gives us the ultimate, timeless antidote to this exhausting cycle of self-reliance:
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:28-29 (CSB)
Notice that Jesus doesn’t say, “Finish everything on your plate, and then come to me.” He invites us into His rest while we are still weary, right in the middle of our burdens.
Holistic Wellness Requires a Pause
True wellness is completely holistic. You can drink your organic green juices, hit every single one of your fitness goals, and take all the right premium supplements, but if your mind is constantly racing with anxiety and your spirit is disconnected from God (The True Vine), your well-being remains deeply fractured. You cannot look after the body while leaving the soul to starve.
True rest begins the moment we hand the steering wheel back to a sovereign God and accept the humbling reality that the world will keep turning perfectly fine even when we pause.
If you are currently white-knuckle gripping your schedule, your goals, or your anxieties, I want to encourage you today: Let go. Step back, take a deep breath, and allow your overstimulated nervous system to settle into the quiet reassurance that God’s grace completely covers your unfinished pages.
Let’s Talk;
True wellness thrives in community, and I want to hear how you are navigating the pressure to do it all.
- Where in your life right now do you need to close the laptop, step away from the pressure, and simply choose rest?
- Perhaps a full day off feels completely unrealistic for your current season. What about starting small? How can you incorporate just 15 minutes of silence every 4 hours to recalibrate your mind?
