The Guilt and Shame of Christmas

Christmas is over but the brain can not forget all the binge eating and sweet and savoury treats. Many people start January with a desire to eat better and adopt a more active lifestyle.

Christmas is over but the brain can not forget all the binge eating and sweet and savoury treats. Many people start January with a desire to eat better and adopt a more active lifestyle. However, by April they have barely met their goals while suppressing or carrying the shame and guilt of Christmas.

Barely three months after Christmas, the excess chocolate eggs and celebratory foods of Easter adds another layer of guilt and shame. Soon after recovering from holiday mode, summer brings irresistible ice cream vibes with cold alcohol and fizzy drinks looking more necessary and attractive than they ever were. 😂

It dawns on some that they might not be able to wear their favourite bikini because from January to April they were coasting from one festive vibe to the other, not undermining the effect of the abundance of sweet treat deals during valentine which comes like a whirlwind but leaves a lasting mark of unhealthy choices in the name of love. Throughout the year, there is always a reason to eat unhealthy foods and adopt unhealthy lifestyle choices that build up tooth cavities, fats in our blood vessels, worsens our mental health, and weakens our bones and muscles. It stems from familiar reasons such as;

  • “I close late from work”
  • “I do night shifts”
  • “I have to work on my computer all day”
  • “My kids don’t let me exercise”
  • “I have to eat my children’s left overs to avoid waste”
  • “I will always be overweight like everyone in my family no matter how hard I try”
  • “I’ve tried and now enjoying my life and accepting my body”
  • “I am pre menopausal”
  • “I am naturally slim, it doesn’t matter what I eat”
  • “Its my spouse, always giving me unhealthy things”
  • “I am unhappy in my marriage”
  • “It’s stress I need alcohol to cope”

As summer wraps up, winter blues kick off. Slow and steady we have more reasons for a sedentary lifestyle and more excuses for cups of coffees and hot chocolates. It’s too cold and windy for a walk, and too laid back for a swim. A cigarette will do. Too many series released for binge watching instead of exercising with a 30 minute You Tube exercise series challenge. Perhaps a fat burning pill will do the magic! How can someone made in the image of God be so helpless?
